Samura Kamara Calls for Unity, Draws Inspiration from Other Political Successes

Meanwhile, sources within the APC, including some executive members who have made public insinuations and outright calls to replace him ahead of the 2028 elections, also hinted that the candidate for the ruling SLPP would be a far more formidable force.

Former presidential candidate for the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Dr Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara, has addressed his party members, sending a message resonating with calls for unity and strategic foresight in what is increasingly becoming a flagging party.

His attempt at bringing the party together comes in the wake of a series of issues within the party, including an instance where some party members raised concerns over the complaints and eventual suspension of the recommencement of party registration and verification exercise as well as the imminent implosion caused by his alleged marginalisation by the National Advisory Committee.

The embattled leader, who is struggling to convince the leadership of the APC that he has what it takes to lead the party in 2028, drew inspiration from the recent Democratic National Convention (DNC) in the United States to emphasise the importance of solidarity.

He said members and executive of the APC should reflect on how the Democrats in the U.S. successfully rallied behind Kamala Harris, a relatively unknown figure at the time, and transformed her into a national leader.

Dr. Kamara highlighted the significance of this example, noting how the unity and collective effort within the Democratic Party elevated Harris and strengthened the party’s position on a national scale.

He urged APC members to embrace this spirit of comradeship, emphasising that the party’s strength lies in mutual support across all levels of membership. By doing so, he believes that the APC can restore hope, confidence and ultimately lead Sierra Leone towards a brighter future.

“This is our moment to demonstrate to the world that we are ready to lead with integrity, vision, and unity,” Dr. Kamara declared, urging his fellow party members to come together and move forward with a shared purpose towards victory.

Meanwhile, sources within the APC, including some executive members who have made public insinuations and outright calls to replace him ahead of the 2028 elections, also hinted that the candidate for the ruling SLPP would be a far more formidable force.

It is reported that some members and supporters of the APC are insisting that the party’s constitution, much like the SLPP’s of old, only allows partisans two attempts at trying to win the presidency of the country, after which they become an ex-officio member.

They have also questioned his readiness to fight for them because of the leadership he provided in the tripartite agreement the party signed with the governing party following the post-election concerns and hullabaloos after June 2023.

But in an open letter published on 17 July 2024 by Cocorioko and addressed to Dr Samura Kamara, a prominent and powerful figure in the APC based abroad, Alpha Kholifa Koroma esq, commended his efforts to get past the elections and usher in peace, stability, national cohesion and democracy by agreeing to work with the government.

“As a legal expert, I see no reason why the Tripartite must fail. Lack of legal knowledge has given the most fainted disbelief over it. But for me as a legal personality and of the international participants, it is no gainsay that the intrinsic substance of that binding agreement shall surely bear fruits: restoration of democracy in our motherland. That is what you stand for…

“My advice to you is that don’t give up the fight as the songwriter, Bob Nestor Marley says. Martyrdom will become your historical path in the aftermath of your success over your opponents,” he said.
