Kenyeh Laura Barlay, Sierra Leone’s minister of Planning and Economic Development, believes that Azerbaijan will continue to defend climate issues integrated into peace and security during COP29.

In an exclusive interview with Report, the minister praised Azerbaijan’s preparations and highlighted the country’s commitment to addressing climate finance and related issues.

“I believe Azerbaijan’s preparations for COP29 are going quite well,” Minister Barlay stated. “Our main expectation from COP is the resolution of climate finance and many associated issues. Within the framework of COP28 in the United Arab Emirates, there have been long-standing progress on decisions and declarations related to peace and development. Now, Azerbaijan must continue this role and pay special attention to climate financing at COP29.”

The minister emphasized that developing countries affected by climate change are facing humanitarian problems, and funds have not been equitably distributed to address these consequences. “Azerbaijan has already taken on the responsibility of addressing humanitarian issues arising from climate disruptions, and I believe the country will continue to defend climate issues integrated with peace and security during COP29,” she added.

Minister Barlay also revealed that she is preparing to visit Baku to participate in COP29.
