As Sierra Leone approaches the crucial 2028 general elections, the country’s political future demands a candidate who transcends the traditional divisions of party, region, and religion. The post-President Julius Maada Bio era presents both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) with the challenge of selecting a flagbearer that can unite a politically fractured nation.
This article argues that Sierra Leone needs a socially, religiously, regionally, and politically acceptable candidate—a compromise figure with widespread respect and international standing—to ensure peace and stability while advancing the country’s socio-economic development.
The Need for a Compromise Candidate
Historically, Sierra Leone’s political landscape has been marked by deep-seated divisions along ethnic, regional, and political lines. Elections have often reflected these divides, with the SLPP dominating the southeast and the APC in the northern regions. This polarisation has frequently fueled tensions and undermined national unity.
Therefore, a candidate who can bridge these divides, emerging from within the internal political struggles of the SLPP or APC as a unifying force, is essential for the country’s future stability. Such a figure would need to have the respect and admiration of all shades of opinion—someone capable of commanding support not just within their party but across religious, regional, and social lines.
A compromise candidate would be one who acknowledges the grievances and aspirations of all Sierra Leoneans, whether they are from the Muslim north or the Christian south, the politically active youth or the older generation of party stalwarts. This kind of leadership is vital in ensuring that the election does not devolve into a contest of tribal loyalties but becomes a platform for addressing pressing national issues such as poverty, healthcare, and education.
International Appeal and Diplomatic Experience
Beyond the need for internal unity, Sierra Leone requires a leader who can hold their own on the international stage. In an era where global diplomacy is increasingly critical, the next president must have the diplomatic skills and experience to engage effectively with the international community. Sierra Leone’s political and economic stability is closely tied to its relationships with global and regional partners, including West African states, the African Union, and major world powers such as the United States, the European Union, and China.
A candidate with international appeal – someone who has demonstrated success in governance, diplomacy, and security – will be able to attract foreign investment, secure international aid, and help reposition Sierra Leone as a key player in West Africa. A knowledgeable character, fluent in French and English, will be crucial in this respect to leverage the intricate interests unique to Francophone and Anglophone blocs, especially in West Africa, Sierra Leone’s closest neighbours and peers.
The West Africa region is a focal point of old and new forms of armed conflict. This includes violent extremism, organised crime, piracy, unrest due to social inequality, land use conflicts and election-related violence. Many of these security challenges cannot be resolved with national measures alone.
Also, given the geopolitical complexities of the region, which faces ongoing threats from terrorism, regional instability, and economic challenges, the next president should be well-versed in the geopolitics of both Africa and the West. Having a leader with such a profile would elevate Sierra Leone’s standing in global forums and ensure that the country’s interests are effectively represented.
Learning from Past Leadership
President Julius Maada Bio has set a high bar with his focus on education, national security, and governance. His administration has made significant strides in reducing corruption, improving governance, and increasing access to education through the Free Quality Education initiative.
However, to build on this foundation, the next leader must be one who can continue these reforms while bringing a fresh perspective to the country’s pressing challenges. The next candidate must also be someone who can engage effectively with Sierra Leone’s development partners, building on the goodwill established by President Bio’s administration.
Sierra Leone has seen the dangers of electing divisive figures, as political instability can easily derail the country’s development agenda. The next leader must be one who not only understands the political dynamics of the country but also has the capacity to navigate complex geopolitical issues, especially as Sierra Leone continues to face external pressures from global powers and regional instability.
The Candidate’s Track Record in Governance and Security
A potential candidate for the 2028 elections must also demonstrate a strong track record in governance and security, areas critical to the nation’s development. As Sierra Leone continues to rebuild after its civil war, the next leader must be well-versed in the intricacies of national security, with a focus on addressing both internal threats and external pressures. The rise of terrorism in West Africa and the Sahel region poses significant risks to Sierra Leone’s stability, making it imperative that the country’s next president has a deep understanding of regional security dynamics.
Additionally, governance reforms must remain a priority. Sierra Leone has made strides in fighting corruption and improving public services, but these efforts need to be sustained and expanded. The ideal candidate would be someone who not only has experience in governance but also possesses the leadership skills to unite a diverse and sometimes polarised political environment. Such a leader would help ensure that Sierra Leone continues on its path of socio-economic progress.
A Candidate for All Sierra Leoneans
The post-Maada Bio era represents a critical juncture for Sierra Leone. Both the SLPP and the APC must rise to the occasion by selecting candidates who not only represent their respective party’s values but also embody the aspirations of the entire nation.
Sierra Leone’s future stability and progress depend on a leader who is a compromise figure—someone who can command respect from all regions, religions, and political backgrounds. This leader must have the diplomatic, governance, and security expertise to navigate the complexities of both national and international politics. As Sierra Leone prepares for the 2028 elections, the choice of such a candidate is not just a political necessity but a national imperative.
