President Bio of Sierra Leone, Cyril Ramaphosa of SA Among First to Address UNGA

Presidents Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa are scheduled to address the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday.

President Bio will be the second African head of state to speak at the session and 13th overall, following addresses by the leaders of Brazil, the United States, Türkiye, Jordan, Guatemala, Switzerland, Colombia, and the Amir of Qatar.

South Africa’s President Ramaphosa is set to speak as the ninth presenter of the day. The focus of the session will largely revolve around the resolution of ongoing global conflicts, including the wars in Gaza, Russia-Ukraine, and Sudan.

Discussions are also expected to cover critical issues such as climate change, global inequalities, debt burdens, and the impact of new technologies.

Following President Bio’s address, Angola’s President Joao Lourenco and Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani will continue the dialogue, speaking as the 15th and 16th speakers respectively.

The UNGA session will conclude its proceedings with updates and additional speakers from Wednesday to Monday.
