Deputy Energy Minister launches ‘Light Every Birth Sierra Leone Initiative’

Dr. Eldred Tunde Taylor,  Deputy Minister of Electricity, has launched the ‘Light Every Birth Using Solar Suitcase’ program in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation and We Care Solar to offer sustainable energy supply in health facilities around the country.
Dr. Taylor stated, “Providing clean and sustainable energy supply to health institutions is one of the requirements to improving health care delivery.”
He explained that President Bio’s New Direction government is dedicated to investing in and supporting the use of low-cost renewable energy solutions in order to increase electricity access to rural populations as well as urban centers and townships. Dr Taylor stated that the New Direction, the administration has so far linked 90 rural areas using Solar Mini-grid Solutions, with additional rural towns still to be electrified. Dr. Taylor concluded his Keynote address by saying that the government acknowledges the timely involvement and efforts being made by the We Care Solar Suitcase Group in supplementing the government’s energy strategy by targeting more than 1,100 health institutions around the country. He concluded by promising the We Care Solar Group that President Bio’s New Direction Government will continue to push tax exemptions for all solar luggage imported into the nation as a sign of the government’s continuous support for long-term cooperation.
Earlier, Hon. Dr. Kandeh Yumkellah praised the We Care Solar Group for its generosity in supplying such low-cost electricity to health institutions, claiming that it will lower maternal and infant mortality rates. Hon. Yumkellah also complimented and congratulated the government for its strong partnership, which he said demonstrates the government’s concern for the lives and well-being of its citizens.
Acting Chief Medical Officer Ministry of Health and Sanitation–Dr. Sartie Keneh, Hon. Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation– Dr. Anthony Augustine Sandi, We Care Program Coordinators–Ms. Fatmata Legg and Mrs. Feza Greene underscored the importance of consistent energy availability in Labor and Delivery rooms, citing that it minimises maternal and mortality.
