Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), Musayeroh Barrie, has announced at the weekly government press conference that are making significant efforts to remove Sierra Leone from the aviation blacklist, a status the country has endured since 2008.

She revealed that the SLCAA has an 8-month roadmap aimed at achieving this goal. For the first time since 2008, Sierra Leone is processing two applications for Air Operating Certificates (AOC), a major step toward allowing aircraft to be registered within the country.

Madam Barrie also highlighted initiatives to improve regional connectivity, with two airlines in discussions to link Sierra Leone with Liberia, Guinea, Senegal and Ivory Coast in West Africa. She said those connections were expected to enhance travel and trade between Sierra Leone and its neighbouring countries, promoting economic growth and improving accessibility.

“In addition to these developments, the frequency of flights at Freetown’s Lungi International Airport has increased from 37 to 47 flights per week. Brussels Airlines, one of the key international carriers, is also considering expanding its operations, which could further boost the airport’s weekly flights to 50. These improvements signal Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing its aviation sector and regaining its standing in the global aviation community,” she revealed.
